About Me

Who am I? Good question. OK less of the philosophy!? My name is Les Meehan. I spent 10 years as a devoted professional photographer in my studio in London working in the advertising/editorial field. Since the recession of the early 1990's I have concentrated more on teaching workshops and carving out a successful career as a writer of photography books.

I have used the Zone System since 1979 for all my work in both colour and mono, both in the studio and out in the landscape. I have exhibited my mono and colour work both in the UK and in Europe. My teaching experience has been gained through having a Certificate in Education from Manchester Metropolitan University and by conducting practical photography workshops in the UK, in France and currently in Spain.

With seven photography books in five languages to my credit and numerous photography articles published, I am also a very experienced writer. Over the last 15 years, I have become an advanced practitioner in digital imaging (still using the Zone System), especially for personal work (see my Galleries) and for my book writing. In fact, six of my seven books deal with digital imaging.

My ambition is to introduce as many people to the correct use of the Zone System as possible because I believe (from seeing it) that the general standard of exposure control amongst students, amateurs and even many professionals is not as good as it should be. Many people never gain confidence in their practical exposure control skills, and it is so easy to learn. Unfortunately, many of these people learn from amateur magazines that are written by people who are only half a page ahead of them in the theory stakes. They never think to learn from real masters like Adams, Weston (all of them), Strand, etc., etc.
